Community Action

Foodbank

The Good Shepherd has been hosting Foodbank in the church since Valentine's Day 2013. The church opens every Thursday between 11am - 1pm. Occasionally if the church is needed Foodbank moves to the hall. All people who come for food must bring with them a voucher from an agency that knows their situation and no-one should have more than 3 vouchers in 6 months except in extreme circumstances. However all are welcome to pop in and share a cup of tea and a chat.

Community Living Room

Since summer 2022, we have opened our doors every Tuesday morning to create a community living room in the heart of our church. We set out tables and chairs, serve free tea and coffee and provide a space with toys for babies and young children. Occasionally, we are joined by local agencies which support residents struggling with bills, such as The Green Doctor or Cambridge Water.  These mornings are well-loved and well-attended by 60-80 people of all ages each week. In the colder months of the year, we ensure the church is well heated to provide a warm space for all local residents. Running alongside our Community Living Room is a Food Hub, supported by Cambridge Sustainable Food. All attending the Community Living Room can choose to take a small parcel of tins, bread and fresh fruit and vegetables for free. No voucher is required. Food distribution begins at 11:30am.

Little Lambs

Our parents and toddler group is held in the church hall each Monday morning during term time. There are toys, singing, stories, freshly baked cakes and tea and coffee, in a friendly and relaxed space. We love to welcome new guests and get to know more of the wonderful families in Arbury and Kings Hedges.

Prayer Shawls.

The shawls are blessed in Church and then go out with a label of blessing to those who have been christened or who are in any form of need.  They bring great comfort and are a sign of the prayers of the church for the individuals.

Community action day

Each year in the autumn the Good Shepherd works in partnership with other local churches and the local authority to organise a clear up and recycling event in North Arbury.

Holiday Lunches

Together with local churches and community centres the Good Shepherd provides free activities and a hot lunch during the school holidays. All are welcome (see events page for more information).

Care homes

Each month we hold services in two local homes, Buchan House and  Alex Wood House.
